Showbread : Life, Kisses, and other Wasted Efforts RATING: (9 out of 10) RELEASE DATE: n/a LABEL: REVIEWED ON: December 10th, 2005 REVIEWED BY: Bryce CooleyREVIEW
Anyone who has ever come to ChristCore or talked to me knows that I love Showbread. So as you could expect knowing me I was as giddy as a school girl when i got their CD in the mail!! OK sorry enough about that.
Compared to their 3 independent EP's release the production quality was awesome. My one complaint was that their vocals were kinda quiet and faded in with the music, but eventually I got used to and now I don't care anymore. But it may throw some people off at the start just continue to give it a chance.
A couple of my favorite tracks on this CD include "I had music in my heart, but now my heart is broken" or as most people who know the band know it "not so pretty when your dead." This song for me captures the essence of Showbread, off timing, punk, hardcore, screaming, a mix of the Refused and Norma Jean. I also love the track "I am a Machine Gun" out of all the tracks on the CD the recording quality on this is the best and most even. This has always been one of my favorites, you know those songs that you don't know what their saying so you just make up the words until you read em and memorize them, that is what this song was for me. I was very excited when I realized what their "if I were, if I were, If I were a machine gun" chant was saying. It makes the song so much more fun! I also just love the song "Stabbing art to death" starting with a form of "flatline" of the music and than josh coming in "oh no the music is dead because we killed it", and then the music begins I was like WHAT THE HECK. The song at 7:25 described by guitar player as "a musical opus" (see interview) is exactly that. ONe that push the envelope on creativity. The whole song changes at least 5 or 6 times. And you get an awesome hardcore breakdown perfect for you all you hardcore dancers.
I could go into all the songs but this review would be longer than most novels so I will leave it at that. this is a solid CD one that can give hours of enjoyment to all who heart it. remember "Art is not the world, Art is in our hearts" and "RAW, ROCK, KILLS"
