RATING: (8 out of 10) RELEASE DATE: January 31st, 2011 LABEL: Independent REVIEWED ON: June 25th, 2011 REVIEWED BY: Brian MorrissetteREVIEW
Stitched is a Dallas, TX-based melodic rock band. They are in the same vein as Skillet, Disciple, Decyfer Down, and Echoes the Fall. Their sound also has this Newsboys ambiance that I can’t seem to pin down. Now I know what you’re probably already thinking: they aren’t the most original band ever, and you would be right, to a certain point.
Brian Gardner’s vocals on this EP are superb, with his voice comparable to that of David Mackey (Echoes the Fall). One thing I didn’t like was the use of auto-tune on Brian’s vocals on “Lsng Cntrl." That leads to the question of whether all the vocals used auto-tune to an extreme. Other than that the rest of the vocals on this album are top notch.
Disciple and Decyfer Down are two bands that are easy comparisons to what this music sounds like. The instrumentation on this album shows that this band is extremely talented. But that doesn’t stop the music from, at times, lacking originality, though this fact doesn’t stop this album from being enjoyable. This problem didn’t turn me off because the majority of “Christian” rock bands out there struggle with the same problem. Also the songs do tend to run together at times, but not enough to make a big stink about it.
The lyrics are your normal “Christian” rock fare. They mostly talk about God and breaking away from the devil and this world. That’s definitely not to say they are bad, just that they are nothing super duper deep. The lyrics are definitely uplifting and not dumb. The lyrical depth on this EP kind of reminds me of Skillet.
I thoroughly enjoyed this album from front to back. If you’re a fan of any of the aforementioned bands, you’ll doubtlessly not want to miss out on Stitched or their EP, Get Stitched. Even if you’re not a fan of “rock music,” this EP is worth at least one listen-through for anybody. I would even dare to say about this EP that it’s better than Skillet’s latest release, Awake. Call me crazy, whatever; just check this album out for yourself.
4/5 Stars: Like most albums this one has its flaws, but this EP shows that Stitched is going to have a bright future in music.
